I named ‘what i went to school for’ radical remembering through land and people tending. radical, in the botanical sense, meaning to spring forth, from the base: the root of a plant; and radical, as the social descriptor, affecting the fundamental nature of something, (especially social change and action).
My studies have been radical in the sense that, i made art from honorably gathered non native plants, and thought about art making as a social practice in which I became connected to plants that struggle to fit in. I thought about who they were, and how they got here. As I did this, thoughts blended with my own sense of self and belonging, and the query of, how i could be a good guest on native land.
This drew me to become educated in not only anti-capitalist, but anti-colonial measures of living, and to begin a journey to understand, and to remember, my own lineage’s way of being in relationship with plants, place, and each other in a good way. Time bends, and I try to bridge the gaps into the here and now.
